It's Painful...

Eva has been boycotting her veggies lately. Even veggies she has loved for years she now turns her nose up to. This Happy Housewife isn't having it....the girl needs to eat her veggies.

I've tried being kind about it (let's play a game to see who can eat the most peas)!!!

I've tried being sneaky about it (pureeing the veggies and hiding them in the food thanks to the cookbook Deceptively Delicious by Jerry Seinfeld's wife).

But whatever way I approached it it alllll came down to the fact she simply MUST EAT HER VEGGIES....

Oh the pain!!!! The agony of those little green veggies!!!!!
The D-R-A-M-A!!!!
The part that made me laugh out loud about this whole thing is that I remember doing the exact same thing when I was little. It must be a right of passage. Ahhhh....the joys of childhood.

So True...

A woman is often measured by the things she cannot control.
She is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve,
by where she is flat, or straight or round.
She is measured by 36-24-36 and inches
and ages and numbers...by all the outside things
that don't ever add up to who she is on the inside.
And so if a woman is to be measured,
let her be measured by the things she can control,
by who she is and who she is trying to become.
Because as every woman knows, measurements are only statistics and
STATISTICS LIE.

I want to be a boy...

Lately Eva has been telling Matt and I she wants to be a boy so she can play sports. It dawned on us that most of the sporting events we watch are men's sporting events. We decided we needed to make a conscious effort to show our little girl that ladies can ROCK the sports world too!!

Last night we took Eva and Jaden to a Notre Dame girls basketball game. She loved it, as did her brother! When they were announcing the starting line up they turned off all of the lights and used spotlights! I took Eva as close as I could so she could see the action and some super friendly ushers noticed how much my little girl loved it...they took us right down on the floor so we could be right with the action! The picture below is of Eva with the girls basketball team illuminated by a spotlight behind her!!

Just in awe...

Lovin' watching the ladies...

I just hope my little girl remembers this quote when it comes to girls and sports...
"Anything you can do I can to better...I can do anything better than you. Anything you can be I can be greater...sooner or later I'm greater than you!"

This song takes me back...

Isn't it crazy how a song can take you back to a certain place and time in your life? I was driving today and a few different songs came on the radio that took me back to various events in my life as if it were yesterday. Time passes by so quickly and certain songs allow me to stop and take notice. One of the songs I heard today was an old country song called "Watermelon Crawl". This song has never been one of my favorites, but it did happen to be very popular at the beginning of my first year of college. Listening to it brought back a flood of memories of my first year away from home, my roommate Kim, and the laughs (or should I say antics) we use to share that year (we don't need to get into all the details). Kim and I would giggle until my stomach hurt. Good times. Good memories. It was fun to remember all of that, if only for a moment, while listening to that song.

Other songs that bring back memories for me...
"I Get Lost" by Debbie Gibson (first boy/girl party and first kiss)
"She's a Wild One" by Trisha Yearwood (high school fun)
Anything by Lynard Skynard (college years)
"What a Wonderful World" (Matt)

The list could go on and on and on. There is actually one song that my sister and I refer to as "our song" because we loved it so much when we were little girls....just hearing it brings back memories of us dancing and singing to it (probably imitating those Solid Gold dancers again).

The same is true for scents. A certain scent can instantly make my mind travel back in time. I have actually kept the old cologne bottle that Matt used when we were first dating because one little whiff of it reminds me of those first few weeks together....I love it.

What songs or scents take you back?

"I go back to the field and a fifty yard line, a blanket of girls and some rasberry wine...wishing time would stop right in it's tracks. Every time I hear that song...I go back."

Tessa is full of energy and keeps them on their toes with her adorable view of the world and obsession with clothing and shoes. Ella is still a little newborn that just loves to be held and cuddled. Together they make some fun stories!! Take the time to drop in and say hello...you'll be happy you did!

Monster Spray

Eva has had a fear of monsters lately. She is afraid they are outside her bedroom window at night. I have tried patiently explaining to her that there are no monsters out there...even going as far as going outside together at night and looking for any monsters!

Though we found absolutely no signs of monsters anywhere her fears did not subside.

I felt so bad for her because the fear was real..she was not making this up...she really thought there were monsters out there and was afraid to sleep in her bed! I racked my brain for a way to make her feel safe and comfortable again.

My solution was to whip up a little "monster spray" (water with a little fragrance in it). I explained to her that we just need to spray the monster spray wherever she feels monsters might be hiding and it will keep all monsters away!!

It has worked like a charm! Eva sprays her monster spray around her windows every night, then crawls into her bed and falls fast asleep.

Eva's MONSTER SPRAY...one spray a day keeps the monsters away!

A Quick Trip to Idaho

Matt was recently in Idaho on business so the kiddies and I flew out there to spend some time with him! We loved Idaho and look forward to another trip out there - next time we would like to venture over to Yellowstone National Park! Our little trip was the perfect mini-vacation in the middle of a long winter!

Flying into Salt Lake City, Utah was beautiful. It was the first time Eva and Jaden have seen mountains!
After arriving in Idaho we drove up into the mountains a bit just to look at all the pretty scenery!

We took Eva and Jaden to their first movie in a theater! They loved it!

Of course, it wouldn't have mattered WHAT we did Eva's favorite thing is always hanging out in the hotel! She loved the fact we could swim in the middle of winter!

After flying solo with the kiddies on the way out there my husband was kind enough to let me enjoy a seat on the plane all to myself on our return trip. At one point I looked back and saw this. Could anything be more precious?

Recognized....

This past week the little ones and I were meandering the aisles of Target (does this surprise anyone?) when someone said to me, "Excuse me...this is going to sound odd...but are you The Blissfully Happy Housewife?"

I started laughing hysterically...and the poor girl probably thought I'd lost my mind!

The reason I was laughing so hard is because the LAST time I was at Target I saw someone and said, "Excuse me....this is going to sound odd...but aren't you Heather from the blog Livin' the Dream?"

Really. What are the chances?

Sometimes the whole blogging world just kind of blows my mind. As I have said before, I started this blog to document the little things that happen in my life, but so much more as evolved out of it. Yes, I put my life out there for people to read...but I also read about your lives too. Though you may not know it I often laugh and cry with you as I read your posts. You have all become a part of my life...and after my run-in at Target I realized that for some of you I have become part of yours.

So let's raise our glasses for a toast my friends (who cares that it is only lunchtime)...to old friendships grown stronger and new friendships made through this wonderful world of blogging!

And to my reader that I met at Target....an extra toast to you! Thanks so much for taking the time and sayin' hello! It made my day!

Have a beautiful day!
Jamie

PS. For those of you that read my blog but have never commented - the door is always open! I love getting to know my readers and linking back to your blogs!

Stranger Danger

So today the kiddies and I were enjoying a fun lunch at Taco Bell when a man approached our table and commented on how cute the kiddies are. I've wrote about this before - grandma and grandpa types are famous for this - but normally it is a short comment and then the person leaves.

Not this morning.

After commenting on how cute the kids were this guy broke out in a Donald Duck impersonation and started talking to them as if he was the over sized duck himself.

Jaden is terrified of Disney characters. Terrified.

Jaden immediately started shaking his head NO in a futile attempt to tell this guy to knock it off.

The guy didn't get the hint. He continued to talk and talk and talk. I know he may have meant well...but seriously, it was obvious the little one didn't like it. Eva in the meantime is looking at him as if he has just sprouted a second head.

I finally decided enough was enough. I looked at the guy and said, "Actually Sir, he is terrified of Donald Duck"

So the guy finally stops. Then he looks over at Eva and starts firing off questions, "How old are you? How did you get so pretty? What is your name?"

I looked at him and said - politely but sternly - "They are both very good and my husband and I are proud of them!" and then I turned my back to him hoping he would get the hint that this whole conversation was over.

He finally got the hint.

Let me tell you why this annoys me....it's one thing to comment to a parent that they have nice children. I appreciate that. It's an entirely other thing to start talking to the children themselves and firing personal questions at them. I spend a lot of time talking to my children about staying safe and talking to some random guy in Taco Bell that wants to know personal information about you is not safe.

I used it as a teachable moment with my munchkins. After he walked away I explained to both of them that they handled the situation well, but that if Daddy or I were not with them and someone asked them ANY questions they should NEVER EVER talk to them.

In the end, all was well and a very teachable moment was created.

Here is to keeping our munchkins safe in this big world...and to no more Donald Duck weirdos!

Blog Book

A few months back I wrote a post asking if anyone could recommend a website that would print my blog into book format. Blurb was the one most commonly recommend, but I was disappointed to find out they no longer accepted Blogger accounts. I looked at a few others, but wasn't nearly as impressed with what I saw at Blurb. My sister had a blog book created at Blog2Print and was not very pleased with it. As of last month I was still researching different options....until last night...

Break out your dancing shoes, start the music, and pop the champagne open because Blurb is now accepting Blogger accounts again!!! Wha-WHooooooooooooo!!!!!

I downloaded the software needed (for free) and started creating my book last night. I am so extremely excited I may just pee my pants....just kidding of course.

If you are interested in creating a blog book (and realistically if you have created your blog to capture those special everyday moments in your life why wouldn't you want to have a copy of that forever?) than I suggest you run - don't walk - to the Blurb site and get started!!!

Jungle Jim's

I never imagined I would do a blog post on a grocery store....but the grocery store I visited this past weekend was unlike any grocery store I have ever seen. If you live or visit the Cincinnati area you must make a trek to Jungle Jim's. This is not only the largest grocery store I have ever seen in my life with the largest selection of merchandise, it is also a bit of an amusement park / tourist trap with all kinds of fun things to see and enjoy. Let's just put it this way...we spent over 2 hours there with the kiddies and we all had a great time. Enjoy a few pictures....

I wish I had more pictures of the entrance...it is amazing. This is just one small part of it. Eva and Jaden loved all of the pretend zoo animals that greet you!
When they say they offer fresh seafood....they aren't kidding. They had a huge selection of fish that you pluck right out of the water!

They even have little shows that are put on for the kiddies....this was Elvis!

I'm a girl that loves cheese (especially with a little wine)...again, I've never seen so much cheese and so many cool varieties in my life!
This is JUST the selection of honey! HONEY!! Seriously....I think my grocery store has maybe 3 different to choose from!

You name the country and they have a section devoted to foods native to that area. This Happy Housewife could have gone crazy in the "Italy" section!

The liquor section was nearly as large as my entire grocery store....wines from every section of the world. I also got a kick out the Cold Beer Cave!

They have an entire sushi section....with skilled sushi chefs creating beautiful sushi right in front of you!

I think it is fair to say that I was in awe of this grocery store....I had to laugh when I found myself pulling my camera out and taking pictures of it!! I knew I wanted to share it with all of you! Again, if you get to the area you need to check it out! We also spent some time at IKEA while we were there....don't even get me started on that one!! Ah-ma-zing!!!
Thanks Matt and Amanda for an amazing weekend in Cincinnatti...we love you and sincerely enjoyed our time visiting with you!
Quote of the Weekend:
While away Eva and I slept in the same bed. I love being close to my little girl....but she is a bit of a thrasher at night and I find myself awakened during the night being kicked, hit, and shoved by my darling little sleeping beauty. The next morning I asked Eva if she knew she kicked me all night. Without hesitation she replied,
"Yes....it was because I love you and I was trying to hug you with my feet!"
Funny how the next night every time she kicked me I smiled!

The Economy

This is a post I have thought about in my head for months...but never really wanted to write about.

I think it's time.

I am, by nature, an eternal optimist. I always see the glass as half full....always. What I haven't shared with you is that I am also a worrier. I know...those don't seem to go well together. I worry about the state of our economy. I worry about my family and friends that are dealing with salary cuts....or even job loss. I am just torn up about those suffering right now. Absolutely TORN UP.

It scares me when I hear people say that it may take years before things improve. Years?! Can we all muddle through this that long? It really can be scary.

But as I think about all of this I have to look deep into my soul to find my true feelings about it and I have to tell you...my heart tells me that things will get better, and that God never gives us situations we can't handle if we have faith in Him.

These are scary times...no doubt about it...but a sense of calm can be achieved among the storm with our faith. I think that we are put into situations like this for 2 reasons...one is to help us develop our character and the other is to teach us.

When I look back at the scary times I've faced in my life I can see how God used every single moment to guide me and teach me...and ultimately to make me who I am today. Each moment, the good and the bad, helped form me. The current conditions are just another example of that. I've learned not to take financial stability for granted. I've learned that my parents taught me correctly when they taught me to "save for a rainy day"....and I will teach my children the same thing. I've learned how much each and every type of industry relies so much on eachother for their own growth and development.

I've learned that we are all in this together...and we'll get through it together.

Lastly, I think that the current economic conditions will always be a basis for which we will always refer back to. I can see us 10 years down the road saying, "Well, it's not as bad as it was back in 2008." These are times we may very well be telling our children about. Times that taught us more than we ever thought we would learn.

On a lighter note, here are a few things this Happy Housewife is doing to help out our family during this economic crunch:

1. I've cut nearly $40 off of our weekly grocery bill by carefully planning our meals and ONLY buying what I need (which means I go through my cabinets with a fine tooth comb prior to grocery shopping).

2. We do not go out to eat as often, or indulge in shopping trips as often but - and this is important - we have not stopped doing either of these things. I think one of the worst things we can do is simply quit spending. Our economy will only worsen. We still indulge in these things...just in moderation.

3. I've always had a pretty tight hold on where our finances were going...but I am tightening that grip. I am currently working on getting a computer program that puts all of our spending into a pie graph so we can see exactly where each dollar goes. Having a firm grip on our finances helps me remain calm during these times.

4. I quit watching the news (for the most part). "Gloom and Doom" is what makes headlines and good lead stories. People feed into it like moths to a flame and that doesn't help. I try to keep my thoughts positive and the news off.

5. Pray. I personally don't like praying for financial matters...so I prefer to pray for guidance as Matt and I navigate our family through these tough times. I also pray for our new President that he may have the wisdom and knowledge he needs to make choices that will help all of us.

My hope is that you and your families are growing, learning, and putting your faith in God at this time. Take the time to focus your energy on all that you are thankful for and remember that this Happy Housewife is praying for you.

"Tough times never last...tough people do!"
